Badges

Today you will work toward earning three video badges. One will be for creating a screencast, one will be for creating a flipped lesson, and one will be for creating a mini-documentary. Instructions for each badge are below. In order to receive your badges, you must successfully post the URL to your videos to the spreadsheet. You will work in groups of two for this project.

Mini-Documentary

Directions

For this badge, you will interview someone on campus, edit the video and upload it to Google Docs. You will then add the link to the Video Badges Spreadsheet. Below are the guidelines and categories you may choose from:
  • Each group should select a documentary category.
  • Each video must be NO SHORTER than sixty (60) seconds, and NO LONGER than two (2) minutes.
  • Each mini-documentary will include interviews with at least 2 people
  • Do not share any videos which include any profanity, or anything not appropriate for young children to watch or hear. (Everything you share must be rated “G.”)
  • Be sure to ask each person you interview, BEFORE YOU START RECORDING, if you can have their permission to share their video online with the rest of the class. (Do not record an interview with anyone who does not give permission, or record an interview with a minor under 18 unless you also have their parent/guardian’s permission.)
  • Check out an iPad for each pair of students.
  • Once you have captured your video footage, you will upload it to your Google Drive account, then download it on the computer to the desktop.
  • You will edit the video using Windows Movie Maker*. Your video should include the following features:
    • Intro screen
    • Transitions
    • Sub-titles
    • Credits
  • You will save the edited video in Windows Media format (.wmv) and upload it to Google Drive.
  • Create a Public link and add the URL to the spreadsheet.
*If you have a Mac with you, it's OK to use iMovie

Categories

Each group must decide on and select ONE theme. Choose a theme and interview people with questions based on this theme. Suggested themes and questions are listed below, but teams are NOT limited to only using these themes / questions. Teams only NEED to include one video but may upload / share up to three video examples.
  1. Stress
    1. What are the main things causing you stress right now?
    2. What are the most effective ways you reduce stress in your life?
    3. What is the worst example of “coping with stress” you’ve seen or heard about at college?
  2. Texas Rangers Baseball
    1. Do you like the Texas Rangers?
    2. Why or why not?
    3. What predictions would you offer for the Rangers this season?
    4. How long have you been a Rangers fan?
    5. How long do you think someone needs to be a Rangers fan to be considered a “true” fan?
  3. Healthy Eating: Is eating healthy important to you? Why or why not?
    1. What is the most extreme example of healthy eating you’ve seen since you’ve been at TCU?
    2. What is the most effective way to encourage people to change their eating habits?
  4. TCU Pride: Interview people who are wearing some kind of TCU apparel at the time of your interview.
    1. Why are you proud of TCU?
    2. What do you think makes TCU stand out among other college choices today?
    3. What are your favorite things about TCU, and/or your favorite things to do on campus?

Screencast

For this badge, you will create a short screencast of a computer process. Some possible topics for your screencast may be:
  • Adding an attachment to a TCU e-mail
  • Uploading a document to Google Drive
  • Making a Google Document public
  • Editing a Google Site
  • Creating a Glog
  • Creating a VoiceThread
  • Sharing a link on a Google Map
  • Etc.

Directions

In order to capture this Screencast, you will use Screencast-O-Matic. I would recommend watching this video tutorial for how to use this tool:

  • Once you have your screen positioned, record your video. When you are finished recording, click Done.
  • You will choose Publish to Video File and save the recording to your desktop.
  • Upload the screencast video to Google Drive, and add the URL to the spreadsheet.

Flipped Classroom

For this badge, you will teach a short lesson on an academic topic. Ideas for possible topics are listed below:

  • Set up the teaching space with diagrams or pictures you intend to use before you start recording
  • Record your lesson
  • When you are done click Done and Save Lesson
  • Name your lesson based on your topic. Click Next
  • Choose Public from the list, and click Save when finished
  • Preview your lesson
  • Go to the following website on your computer and log in with the same credentials
  • Find your lesson, copy the URL and paste it to the spreadsheet
